Garage Flooring Options
When most people think of stylish flooring options for their home’s interior, they usually think of classic white tile in the bathroom, eye-catching Spanish tile in the kitchen, and polished hardwood in the living room.  But there’s another space in your San Clemente house that could also benefit from an elegant floor: your garage.

Due to the unique demands placed on this space – like heavy foot and vehicle traffic – you don’t want to put just any flooring material in your garage. You need something that won’t stain or break and will leave plenty of options for beautifying the garage storage space quickly and inexpensively.

In this post, our Garage Excell flooring specialists have compiled a list of some of the most popular garage flooring options among Irvine homeowners.

#Concrete Stain

Concrete stain is usually applied in a thin coat that allows the old floor to show through. If you’re looking for the cheapest garage flooring option and your concrete floor is in optimal shape, a concrete stain can be a salient choice.

But if your concrete is splattered and spotted, it won’t work since those imperfections will show through. Stain has a longer lifespan than paint because it becomes part of the concrete. You can find a range of attractive watercolor or natural stone options, depending on the look you’re going for.

#Concrete Sealer

If you’re working with a super tight budget, your garage flooring options are obviously going to be limited. But if your concrete floor is in good shape, simply applying a concrete sealer might be enough to update the floor.

The little sheen that a sealer can add to a plain, boring concrete floor will make it look more attractive. Plus, the sealing will prevent any stains, ensuring that your garage floor keeps looking fresh.

We recommend choosing a solvent-based sealer, which gives a wet look and provides exceptional protection. Or, if you or someone in your house has breathing issues, go for a water-based sealer that is less harsh to breathe in (but doesn’t last as long, unfortunately).

#Epoxy Garage Flooring

Epoxy is a type of paint or coating that contains a built-in hardener. It is one of the most durable and toughest finishes that you can apply to your garage floor. It not only transforms a drab-looking concrete floor into a sleek-y perfection but also protects it from daily wear and tear.

And since you probably use your garage for storage as well as a place to park, garage floor epoxy is an investment worth considering. Depending on which type of coating you choose, you can select from a variety of understated hues and colors. Other options include metallics, custom colors, and blends of colored flakes to match your home’s décor or style.

At Garage Excell in San Clemente, we design our Polyaspartic epoxy garage flooring with our customers in mind. If you’re like most homeowners in Dana Point and surrounding areas in Orange County, you don’t want to spend money to upgrade garage flooring every couple of years. You want a solid and functional yet beautiful floor that can last decades – and that’s what we offer.

All of our flooring jobs come with a lifetime warranty, so you know you are getting a good bargain and superior workmanship.

The reason why our epoxy garage floors last several decades – unlike our competitors’ – is because of our meticulous floor preparation process and a specially formulated Polyaspartic topcoat. This topcoat makes your floor extremely resistant to chemicals, moisture, and abrasions that are commonplace in a garage. We also have several flakes options available, ranging from 1/16inch to 1-inch flakes in hundreds of colors.

Our flooring technicians have been laying garage epoxy floors for over 25 years and know how to build a floor that lasts. If you believe in the “buy once and buy well” philosophy, you really can’t go wrong with Garage Excell’s epoxy coating. Where epoxy floors installed by other companies start peeling and fading after 8-12 months, our product will look and function the same for decades to come.

#Carpet

For many people in Irvine, carpeting the garage floor may seem crazy but if you don’t use your garage to park a car, you can make it work. But keep in mind that not all carpets are fit to be installed in the garage. Find one that has been specifically made to hold up to the rigors of life in this multipurpose space. It is installed as a series of peel-and-stick square tiles so you may be able to install it yourself.

And in case it gets stained from oils or petroleum products, you can get it power-washed. We have to say, though, that a carpet garage floor is not a low-maintenance option (if that’s what you’re looking for). As you can imagine, it can get stained rather quickly depending on how much you use your garage and what you do in there.

#Paint

Painting a garage floor is easy and quick, not to mention free if you already have some paint on hand. If your concrete is smooth and without any cracks, and you just want to freshen up its look a little, painting it is a good enough option.

But if your existing floor has cracks, holes, or other types of damage, you will need to get it fixed first. Then a primer will need to be applied before you can paint it. Honestly, we don’t recommend paint for garage floors because it is the least durable of all options mentioned in this list. You will need to repeat the process every couple of years which can be tedious.

#Peel and Stick Tiles

Peel-and-stick tiles can be used to cover the surface of your garage floor if it doesn’t have any height imbalances or severe cracks. These tiles are generally made from heavy-duty vinyl and can be customized to create any pattern your heart desires.

#Interlocking Tiles

These tiles are made from long-lasting rubber or vinyl and are snapped together to provide maximum stability. They are great at masking cracks in a concrete garage floor, but if the floor is not level, they won’t work. Just like any other tile option, you can create several different patterns and borders using a multitude of colors to design your perfect garage floor.

#Roll-Out Vinyl Flooring

It is exactly what the name suggests: you just unroll it on the floor, cut off the extra, and voila! If you consider yourself a DIY maestro, and your garage floor is in decent shape, roll-out vinyl flooring might be something to think about.

However, as easy as it is to install, it is very tricky to repair; in case it gets damaged, you can’t just cut out and replace damaged sections. You’ll need to replace the whole thing. It’s also challenging to create custom patterns with this one.
